It\u2019s the end of January already and as the year starts to heat up, we\u2019re momentarily looking backwards to review the work and activities of the year gone\u00a0by. 2016 was an equally challenging and rewarding year for the studio. In the autumn we moved into our new studio space at\u00a0Somerset House Studios<\/span><\/a> and have been firing on all cylinders ever since. <\/span><\/p>\n

But<\/span>\u00a0before we go into a proper\u00a0review, the<\/span>\u00a0best news: We have just launched our new identity, and website!<\/strong>\u00a0With huge thanks to\u00a0Superscript\u00b2<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0for visual identity and branding,\u00a0Sonia Dominguez<\/a>\u00a0for web design,\u00a0toutenpixel<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for web development,\u00a0Geetika Alok<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for colour advise<\/span>, Tim Maughan<\/a> for wordsmithing advice, Marianna<\/a> for the comms, and Vytas<\/a> for the tremendous project management. We will continue fixing bugs so all feedback welcome.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Last year we pushed ourselves to explore new territories, work with new audiences, and forge new partnerships. Against the sickening backdrop of Brexit, the rise of populist racism, uncertainty around climate change, and a wealth of global political and financial instabilities: We felt compelled to try and situate our work in the everyday. We tried to infiltrate our ideas and work into several different environments, hoping that they would be able to positively influence the behaviour of people who were exposed to them. We worked with policy makers, Government departments, and civil servants to try and inspire people to build better futures. Here are some examples of the new ground we broke in 2016:<\/span><\/p>\n

DEPARTMENT\u00a0FOR TRANSPORT\u00a0AND\u00a0POLICY LAB:\u00a0THE FUTURE OF RAIL<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

We started the year working on a\u00a0collaboration<\/span>\u00a0with Strange Telemetry<\/a> for the Cabinet Office\u2019s Policy Lab<\/a> and the Department for Transport. Our mission was to create some tangible futures for the rail industry, and test these with focus groups and end users. You can find out more about the project here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

LABORATORIO\u00a0PARA\u00a0LA CIUDAD\u00a0MEXICO CITY: LEGIBLE POLICY<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In February Anab and Vytas flew out<\/a> to Mexico to work alongside Mexico City\u2019s government to design plausible prototypes of future visions. To create meaningful models for citizen participation and make policies more understandable and accessible. The team\u2019s work has been published in the book:\u00a0The Pursuit of Legible Policy: Encouraging Agency and Participation in the Complex Systems<\/i><\/span><\/a>\u00a0including our essay \u2018Shifting the Balance: Design For Equitable Cities<\/a>\u2019 where we propose five design strategies for enabling systemic change in governance processes.<\/span><\/p>\n

THE\u00a0PRIME\u00a0MINISTER’S OFFICE, AND THE MINISTRY OF ENERGY, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES:\u00a0THE ENERGY FUTURE LAB<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

We worked alongside the PMO, and MOE of the UAE to develop a range of experiential futures responding to new policy options related to renewable energy, demand reduction, and environmental best practice. Our challenge was to imagine the opportunities and consequences of a variety of policies, and present them to decision makers in order to aid and support decision making processes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MUTO LABS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Alongside this work we launched a fictional financial startup,\u00a0Muto Labs<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for Informa UK and Fund Forum International. We performed our company to Fund Forum 2016 in Berlin \u2014 as if we were a real startup \u2014 to provoke industry insiders into critical reflections on new technologies, big-data and ethics. <\/span><\/p>\n

Jon and Jake flew to Istanbul to\u00a0present<\/span><\/a>\u00a0our tactics and futures work to the\u00a0United Nations Development Programme<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Innovation Summit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jon Flint and Anab\u00a0delivered a series of mapping workshops with school children in Eindhoven in partnership with Beam It Up<\/a>, to make maps that grownups dont, maps that reveal\u00a0rich stories, fantasies, secrets and imaginations of a group of citizens who are not normally involved in shaping our cities. We worked on this project in conjunction with the\u00a0State of Eindhoven Smart Council<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Het Nieuwe Instituut Eindhoven<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Other highlights of our year include showing\u00a0Dynamic Genetics vs Mann<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in the UK for the first time at\u00a0Studio 01<\/span><\/a>\u00a0 the launch event for resident artists at Somerset House Studios. we\u00a0met new London Mayor Sadiq Khan at the event, and had the chance to talk about air pollution in the city and our\u00a0Buggy Air<\/span><\/a>\u00a0project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Drone Aviary<\/a><\/span>\u00a0has continued it\u2019s tour with shows in Amsterdam, Basel, Vienna, Manchester, and Liverpool, and will be touring the globe for the next five years as part of Vitra Design Museum\u2019s\u00a0Hello Robot<\/span><\/a>\u00a0exhibition. Anab was\u00a0appointed<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Professor of Industrial Design at Die Angewandte (University of Applied Arts Vienna), and gave her talk\u00a0Rockets of India<\/span><\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0Webstock<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in New Zealand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
